Title: UC Berkeley Awards Program

Chancellor’s Distinguished Service Award

Description & History

The Chancellor’s Distinguished Service Award recognizes University faculty, staff, and organizations for outstanding service, other than teaching or research, in a UC Berkeley school, college, or department (academic or nonacademic). As with the Berkeley Citation, the impact of a recipient’s service is of primary importance, but in the case of the Chancellor’s Distinguished Service Award, that impact is intramural.

A leather-bound document bearing the University seal, the Chancellor’s Distinguished Service Award must be awarded by the Chancellor or the Chancellor’s delegate at a campus ceremony — for example, a retirement party. It may not be awarded in absentia. Approval of the award is kept confidential prior to the presentation so that the award will come as a surprise to the recipient.

Criteria & Nomination Process

The nomination is addressed to the Chancellor, who forwards it to his Advisory Committee on Honors. The committee reviews the qualifications of the nominee and forwards its confidential recommendation to the Chancellor, who has the authority to accept or reject the recommendation. Nominations must include the date and occasion of the presentation, if approved.
